چکیده

The direct harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on benthic and planktonic organisms have been well studied in aquatic systems. Less clear, however, is how UVR might affect aquatic communities through its effects on trophic interactions. The focus of this study was twofold: first, to examine the direct effect of UVR on benthic invertebrates and epilithon, the rock-dwelling matrix of algae, bacteria, viruses, fungi and detritus, and second, to examine the indirect effect of UVR-mediated shifts in epilithic food quality on epilithic consumers. Food quality was assessed by measuring carbon to nutrient ratios and the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the epilithic matrix; the effect of its change on epilithic consumers was measured using a feeding experiment. The study was conducted in four montane lakes, where downwelling UVR can be intense. Of these lakes, the benthic community of only one was strongly affected by UVR. In this lake, exposure to UVR decreased epilithic accrual and invertebrate colonization, and, contrary to our expectations, increased food quality in the shallows through decreased carbon to phosphorus ratios and increased PUFA concentrations. In another of the four study lakes, the feeding experiment showed no significant difference in growth rates between invertebrates fed UVR-exposed and UVR-shielded epilithon, or invertebrates directly exposed to or shielded from UVR. This study demonstrates that although UVR can play an important role in structuring the trophic dynamics of benthic communities, its effects will not be constant across systems, or important in all environments.

The role of solar radiation in structuring the shallow benthic communities of boreal forest lakes

We have attempted to quantify the roles of physical, chemical, and biological interactions structuring the attached algal and invertebrate communities in eight boreal lakes at the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario, varying in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations (3–9 mg L21). Attached benthic communities on rocky, south-facing shores were sampled at 0.1, 0.3, 0.7, and 1.5 m...

Benthic invertebrate community in Khur-e-Mussa creeks in northwest of Persian Gulf and the application of the AMBI (AZTI\'s Marine Biotic Index)

Benthic invertebrates are a well-established target in environmental quality status evaluations. The AMBI (AZTI's Marine Biotic Index) was developed to determine the impacts and the quality status of soft-bottom marine benthic communities. The aim of this study was investigating multivariate pattern of benthic invertebrate community and application of AMBI (AZTI's Marine Biotic Index) for...

Solar and Wastewater Effects on Zooplankton Communities of the Imandra Lake (Kola Peninsula, Russia), 1990 to 2003

Both heliophysical and anthropogenic (wastewater) effects on zooplankton biomass and abundance of the Imandra Lake (the largest subarctic lake at Kola Peninsula, Russia) were investigated during the 1990 - 2003 period. We used different indexes of solar activity (sunspot numbers and UV- radiation values) as heliophysical factors. Information about UV- radiation values was derived from satellite...

Four decades of change: dramatic loss of zoobenthos in an oligotrophic lake exhibiting gradual eutrophication

Native species in lakes commonly are affected by cultural eutrophication and introductions of nonnative species. The effects of these disturbances on benthic communities in large lakes have been understudied, despite the integral role that benthos play in maintaining habitat complexity and ecosystem processes. Lake Tahoe has experienced progressive eutrophication and introductions of nonnative ...
